How to Fix Hover URL Preview Not Working in Google Chrome?

There are no special settings, options, or even an experimental flag available to enable or disable this feature in the browser. Usually, this problem arises either due to a bug or interference from an extension. Based on this information, we have compiled a list of methods that will help you troubleshoot this problem in no time. Refer to the methods below and try it yourself.

Method 1 – Force close the web browser

Often, such problems are caused by random bugs that may cause the browser to not load elements properly at startup. This can be easily controlled by force closing and reopening your browser. Starting Chrome from scratch will help it load all the necessary elements properly, eliminating the bug that is causing the problem.

Close Google Chrome with Task Manager on Windows

You can use Task Manager to close your web browser on Windows. We are using this method because, usually, when we close an application, it still remains in the memory of the computer system. This method will also clear the browser from memory. Here’s how you can do it.

1. Squeeze Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys simultaneously on your Windows keyboard.

2. This will bring up the task manager. scroll down and Right-click on Google Chrome,

Doing this will close the web browser. Now, open Chrome again to verify if the issue is resolved or not.

Force close Google Chrome on macOS

MacOS also allows us to force close an app, for example, the browser. This has the same effect as closing the browser on Windows and will help resolve the issue of link previews not displaying. Use the following steps to force quit Google Chrome browser.

1. click on apple icon In the upper left corner.

2. From the drop-down menu, select force quit…

This will close the browser window, and you can relaunch it to check if the problem is fixed or not.

Method 2 – Delete browser extensions

Web extensions, especially ad blockers, often include scripts that interfere with the browser. To show you link previews on hover, Chrome uses URL Canonicalizer.

It triggers as soon as you hover the cursor over a link and helps load the webpage faster and prefetch the complete URL to show. So, if you are not able to see the link preview then try removing unnecessary extensions.

1. click on extension icon In the Chrome toolbar.

Click on Extensions tab

2. go from here Manage Extensions,

Go to Manage Extensions menu

3. First, we recommend that you turn off the toggles for the extensions that you suspect are causing the problem.

Disable Extensions

This will disable them so you can find out what extensions were causing the link preview not to display.

4. If previews appear again, return to the extensions page.

5. click here Removal button.

Remove extensions from Google Chrome

6. Click again in the confirmation prompt Removal,

Click on Remove to uninstall an extension from Chrome

After removing suspicious extensions, relaunch Google Chrome before using it.

Method 3 – Check for latest browser updates

Since this issue usually occurs as a bug, updating your web browser will help fix it. Chrome keeps releasing new software updates frequently to eliminate those annoying bugs. The Chrome team may be aware of this issue and may have already released an update to resolve it. This is why you should keep your browser updated. Here’s how to update Google Chrome.

1. Click Three point Menu in the upper right corner of Chrome.

2. hover cursor over Help options, then click about chrome,

Go to About Chrome from the Help options in Google Chrome

Chrome will check for the latest available updates. If there is any, the browser will automatically start downloading it.

Method 4 – Use Hover Extension to Preview Links

Many people find the hover link preview useful because you can use it to know which page you will be redirected to. However, it only shows you the page URL, making it difficult to know whether the webpage is genuine or not. For this you can download the hover extension for your browser.

When you hover the cursor over a link, it shows a webpage preview in a pop-up window. You can verify the contents of a page without leaving the current session. This is how it works.

1. download hover extension From the Chrome Web Store.
