Nokia has announced that it will deploy a next generation optical transport network (OTN) that will provide additional capacity and increased reliability to telecom operator Airtel while cutting costs. Operators are working to increase their network capacity as they continue to roll out 5G network services across the country. According to the Finnish telecom provider, the agreement between the two companies will see Bharti Airtel replace its legacy transport switching infrastructure with Nokia’s hardware in its network that connects various cities in the country.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Nokia announced details of its agreement with Airtel, saying that the telecom provider will use Nokia 1830 PSS-X P-OTN Switch To replace your legacy transport switching infrastructure. Nokia’s new hardware will be used in Airtel’s national long distance network that the telecom provider uses in major Indian cities.
According to Nokia, the company’s high capacity OTN switches will help Bharti Airtel increase overall transport capacity and optimize bandwidth efficiency. Telecom service providers can also benefit from using the L-band wavelengths of the optic fiber network by effectively utilizing the additional spectrum, the company said in its press release.
Nokia also cites the increasing demand faced by telecom and broadband service providers as a reason for these companies to provide denser 5G networks by supplementing their backhaul transport. According to the firm, doing so will also allow them to provide connectivity for data center interconnect (DCI), smart grids and other emerging business services.
Chandan Kumar said, “Our technology will help Airtel scale up the capacity and features of Bharti’s optical transport network to meet the growing bandwidth demand driven by the enterprise and hyperscaler segments. This will help Airtel meet the strict SLAs from customers. “Will also provide service level performance.” the head of Nokia India’s Optical Network Business Center said in a prepared statement.
