Here’s why Phantom Liberty will never change the endings of Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 will never get an expansion that was designed to take place after the end of the game’s main story, because the team behind the game didn’t want to risk diluting how V’s story ends.

This is according to CD Projekt Red narrative director Igor Sarzyński, who spoke PC Gamer that, before settling on the premise of ending life as Phantom Liberty, the developers of Cyberpunk thought of taking things in a couple of other directions. However, Sarzyński said that moving on from the events that would follow V’s meeting with Hanako Arasaka of Embers is not in the cards.

Recognizing that, if CDPR chooses a set of final conditions to serve as the basis for a post-final mission adventure, it risks offending players by potentially undermining the choices they make for in their version of V during the events of the game. , the narrative director also suggested that doing so would not have been in line with the team’s wishes.

“The endings were written as we wanted them—leaving the players with an uncomfortable feeling, forcing them to think, without giving straight answers,” said Sarzyński, adding: “They stay with you. (No) need to water them. Sometimes less is more.”

While I don’t personally find basic Cyberpunk endings as breathtakingly compelling as ones like Blade Runner’s iconic tears in the rain monologue followed by an origami-based tease, I can certainly appreciate the conviction of its developers in the strength of their writing and dedication. to allow the players to decide their fate.

That being said, I also feel that Phantom Liberty has a lot of the strongest writing, both in terms of character inspiration and dialogue, in the game as a whole, it might be nice to see what CD Projekt can do if it has. decided to take on the task of continuing the story of V.

Then again, Phantom Liberty has a whole new ending option for Cyberpunk’s main quest, so we can’t complain.
