The Game Awards 2023: Hideo Kojima’s OD, Monster Hunter Wilds, Blade, and more announced

The Game Awards 2023 kicked off earlier today, marking a grand finale to this year’s video game season and celebrating the best games released last year. The lengthy ceremony was once again hosted by Geoff Keighley live from Los Angeles, with Baldur’s Gate 3 winning the coveted Game of the Year award. As always, there were some exciting new announcements, and although some expectations were dashed, there’s still a lot more to come. Notable reveals this year include a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Jordan Peele, a free DLC for God of War Ragnarok, another Skull & Bones release date, and more surprises.

Without further ado, here is the list of the biggest announcements from The Game Awards 2023:

ordnance depot

Hideo Kojima’s appearance at The Game Awards is always watched with utmost excitement, however this time, he didn’t take the stage to show off more Death Stranding 2. Instead, he’s partnering with acclaimed film director Jordan Peele (not). Immersive horror experience that the former assures is still a video game despite the cinematic effects. It’s called OD and the teaser shows some capture tests of the faces of well-known actors – Sophia Lillis (Sharp Objects), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and Udo Kier (Melancholia) – as a Geiger counter, a Some tongue twisters about hungry purple dinosaurs. It ticks in the background. As previously reported, it is being developed for Xbox Game Studios and takes advantage of cloud gaming technology.

Arkane Lyon – best known for the Dishonored franchise – is creating a ‘mature’ single-player tale taking on Marvel’s Blade, aka the Daywalker, an extraterrestrial vampire hunter wielding a sharp titanium sword. Set in an isolated area in Paris, players are tasked with hunting bloodthirsty monsters at night and stopping the spread of the infection. It is Arkane’s second vampire-based video game effort, having previously worked on the disappointing relapse, and marks their first third-person experience. I just hope it keeps the comic-book style full of Ben-Day dots, as shown in the announcement trailer.

skull and Bones

Release date: February 16, 2024
Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X

Reassuring that it’s not the same old dance, Ubisoft has set a firm release date for Skull & Bones, the naval combat game in which you climb the ranks from a novice pirate to a ringleader while hunting down traitors. And defeat dangerous enemies. Wave’s. The studio has also planned another closed beta program to run between December 15-18. Ubisoft+ subscribers can also play it three days early.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

Ninja Theory released an awesome trailer for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, showcasing its realistic cinematics that almost feel like an acid trip, as our returning heroes head to Viking Island to save those Cross those who have become victims of darkness. With puzzles displayed through psychological perspective, strong sound design, and gruesome hand-to-hand combat, it looks quite exciting. However, I wish we knew more about the narrative.

God of War Ragnarok – Valhalla DLC

Release date: 12 December
Platform: PS4, PS5

After defeating Odin, Kratos finds himself sidelined in Valhalla with the ever-annoying Mimir. Players will engage in a highly volatile roguelike experience, overcoming trials by facing random hordes of enemies, culminating in boss battles where each death will take you back to the starting point. It’s unclear how this ties into the main lore of God of War Ragnarok, but it appears as if he faces some enemies from his past life in Greek mythology while experimenting with new creations blessed by the ancient gods. Will have to. And yes, it is a free DLC.

suicide squad kills the justice league

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has received a new trailer introducing its various supervillains – or rather, the heroes who have fallen victim to Brainiac’s mind control – and a glimpse of its high-octane looter-shooter gameplay. A glimpse as we switch between members of Task Force X. While the game was originally meant to be an always-online affair, Rocksteady Studios has confirmed that it will be adding an offline story-focused mode after launch. The game also serves as one of the final voice-acting performances of the late Kevin Conroy before his death.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Release date: 2025
Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X

Although not explicitly mentioned, Monster Hunter Wildes appears to be the franchise’s open-world take on some gorgeous ecosystems reminiscent of swarms of armadillo-looking creatures, lightning storms, and spore-spouting coral reefs. Located in a vast desert. There’s not much to learn from the short demo trailer, but it does promise a 2025 release window – let’s see if it releases before GTA VI!
