Uh oh, the PS5 Slim disc drive looks like it needs an internet connection to install

You may need to be connected to the internet to pair the new PlayStation 5 disc drive add-on with the soon-to-be-released slim version of the console.

As seen by Eurogamer, images of PS5 Slim boxes have begun to pop up online ahead of its US launch, set for November, some of which seem to show a rather concerning line printed on the side in the packaging. This small fine print reads: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console for setup.”

So, what does that mean? Well, your dreams of being able to play PS5 slim disc-based games without the need to make sure you have internet access during the set-up phase at least may be over. While that’s not the end of the world, it’s certainly not good.

If the connection is required to allow devices to contact some kind of authentication server for a security check aimed at determining that you’re using official hardware, it can also lead to some annoying minor line issues. We’ve all experienced what it’s like to try and play an online game when the servers are acting up or encountering issues or downloading an old title again only to find that the online servers of it was extinguished and sent to the famous retirement farm ahead.

Who knows what fun the future will hold if it turns out you can connect just to hook up the hardware needed to play your physical PS5 games?

That said, it seems unwise to rush to judgement, as Sony has yet to acknowledge the images or the unhappy responses they’ve gotten from some on social media. If it provides clarification or issues a statement, we will update this article as soon as possible.

Besides being much smaller in size than the PS5 model it’s set to replace on the shelves, while still packing 1 TB of storage, the Slim’s disk drive seems like a big selling point, with its detachable nature which allows it to be sold separately or packaged in. with the console.

Then again, it’s not all bad, because, unlike this weird custom Diablo-themed PC, the PS5 Slim isn’t covered in anything resembling real human blood (as far as we’re concerned). known).
